Where's *my* €7 haircut?

I went into town today with my housemate. We had lunch and wandered around, running some errands. In Hodges Figgis, he got bored with me looking through the knitting section (they have Nancy Bush's Knitting Vintage Socks!) and said, You know what? I need a haircut; I think I'll go get it done now. I was all, What? Now? Just like that? Don't you need an appointment or something?

Apparently not. Apparently, if you're a guy, you just go down to Sam's (right across from the Stag's Head) and wait in their small queue. And there was only a queue because it was lunch time. Each haircut takes maybe ten minutes, tops. And it cost €7. €7! But no, they don't cut women's hair. We asked.

Every time I've had my hair cut in Dublin, it has cost at least €50. And that cheapest time was only because it was cut by a trainee. I don't mind that it costs so much, because I've asked for big changes to my hair those times. But I've been growing my hair out, and it's now the longest it's been in years. I don't want a haircut haircut; I just want a couple centimeters off the bottom to get rid of the split ends. Honestly, it would take maybe 10 minutes. I don't want it layered. I don't want it feathered or thinned or anything. Just two centimeters off the end. That's all. I refuse to pay €50 for this. But I don't know of anywhere here where I could just get a simple, cheap, quick trim. At home, I would have maybe gone to Supercuts.

I'm reluctant to let The Limey at my hair with a pair of shears, but it may come to that.

There is a place along the quays on the N side that does cheap haircuts. I don't entirely remember where - but it's east of Ormond Quay I think. It doesn't look like the stylists would be up to much in the way of real style, but I'm sure they could manage a straight trim.

I resorted to the hubby last time! :-D

And it worked! I had my hair wet and asked him to trim the tips of my threads with his hair trimmer. So he did a straight line across my back. Priceless.

If you do end up going homemade, I recommend a new pair of sharp scissors and use them only for hair from then on. I've had some scary results after using old junk-drawer scissors.

I´m the same - I´ve long dead straight hair and I hate paying a fortune for someone to just trim the ends but there are some places out there (try more local hairdressers)and say you only want a trim as opposed to a complete restyling and you can get it cheap enough (It worked like that in Cork anyway.) Now that I´ve moved to Madrid I don´t have to worry. Haircuts here are so cheap. Maybe that´s the alternative: get ryanair flights to Madrid to get your hair cut. It would probably work out cheaper! :-)

I have started cutting hair here in Africa. My friend Kyan asks me to cut her hair. I am not that good, but she insists I do it coz who else will do it. *sigh*

My hair is super long these days. No more boy for me.

If you want a cheaper cut, have you looked into the SCHOOL at Peter Mark in Stephan's Green? I emphasize school because there are three Peter Mark's there and apparently one is the most expensive in Ireland. My boss had her daughter's cut and color done there and was happy with it. I also got a free cut there because a student needed the practice!

There's also the David Marshall school of hairdressing near georges street, it will take a long time (i once got a trim that took two hours) but they are very good, the instructors go round a lot and the students don't make a snip without the instructor saying so. just be very clear about what you want done, i.e. 1 inch off, max, because my friend went in and went 'i kind of want it cut, a bit shorter, maybe layers, maybe, i dunno...' and she got this strange bob with the hair really short in the back, i.e. shorter than the hairline! but if you're clear about what you want they are good, and back then it was free!
